Pupil coaching

Information for pupils

Do you know that?

  • When learning becomes more and more tedious and exhausting,
  • if you have the feeling that school is "just no fun",
  • when successes at school diminish or fail to materialize,
  • when there are a thousand other things that are more interesting than worrying about school,
  • when you no longer know what you are actually studying for.

Do you want to change that?

  • Do you want to get clear about your goals again and find a way to achieve them?
  • Would you like to learn how to motivate yourself to learn?
  • Would you like to learn to accept and overcome challenges?
  • Would you like to be able to use your strengths in a targeted way?
  • Would you like to find joy again - also in your school performance?

Information for parents and guardians

Failing at school or even jeopardizing a child's school career is a serious concern for children and parents.

Difficulties controlling their own behavior

Children and young people can often describe what they could or should do to turn the tide - but they don't put it into practice. They simply don't get themselves organized or, despite their good intentions, don't manage to actually change their behaviour.

Or a young person can no longer face challenges with renewed courage after failures.

Or a child is determined to learn more successfully - but doesn't know how to go about it.

Or, in view of the class test, you can no longer recall everything you have learned.

Coaching: Support during the change process

  • Individual coaching

The Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium is a member of the "Netzwerk Schülercoach" and works according to the Osnabrück student coach model. In contrast to specialist tutoring or training in learning techniques, pupil coaching supports personal development, i.e. the attitude towards oneself and also towards learning and school.

It all starts with a detailed consultation. On request, an online test(TOP diagnostics, see below) can help to determine the strengths and the wishes for change of the pupil concerned in a scientifically sound manner. We offer this test and its evaluation through an interview via the learning advisors or student coaches at our school. The cost is currently €30.

Most of the actual coaching can take place at our school. Certified coaches at the WvSG are currently Ms. Suilmann, Ms. Holthaus and Dr. Bickmann. The demand for student coaching is now so great that these experts can also be sought outside the school. You can find such a private student coach via the network or via the school's coaches.

The coach works with the student in approx. 6 - 10 individual sessions. Through coaching, the student gains new access to himself/herself and to his/her own resources, which the young person can then use to realize his/her goals and wishes. In this sense, it is a contribution to individual support through personal development.

  • TOP diagnostics

TOP diagnostics is a scientifically based online test that identifies where learners have strengths and which learning problems exist, e.g. fear of or in class tests, lack of motivation to learn, lack of willingness to make an effort or other problems.

    What does TOP diagnostics mean?

    • This diagnosis describes the way in which a pupil acts, particularly in relation to learning. It is based on the comprehensive personality theory of Prof. Julius Kuhl, Osnabrück. The test variant we use is limited to the parts that are accessible to the person concerned when they think about it.
    • The diagnostics are carried out as an online test (questionnaire) by the Impart Institute in Osnabrück; the test takes about 45 minutes and can be interrupted. The test costs €30, which is to be paid by the parents.
    • The Impart Institute is a scientifically recognized institute; its tests are very cost-effective compared to other personality tests. The Institute for Giftedness Research at the University of Münster, the ICBF, also works with Impart tests.
    • The certificate to order, assign, evaluate and discuss tests is currently held by Dr. Bickmann and Ms. Suilmann as learning consultants at the WvSG.
    • The test participants' data is protected by the Impart Institute in accordance with the current European General Data Protection Regulation. They are only stored there.

    Contents of the test:

    • Determining the basic motives for action, according to the motto: "Everyone has something that drives them." These are: Connection / relationship; achievement / challenge; influence / responsibility; self-realization / freedom.

Ex: Why do you go to school: to meet your friends, to learn something new, to have something to say in the social club or class, to develop as a person?

    • The description of the way in which someone implements these basic motives: e.g. with a confident overview or ingeniously planned, or with the pleasure of simply acting, or with a critical eye for details that could be improved.

Of course, this is a good way to see what might be going wrong, e.g: Someone has great plans but doesn't implement them; someone only broods over mistakes and problems and paralyzes themselves as a result; someone likes to act and is super committed - but only as long as it doesn't become difficult...

    • The description of important self-control skills, e.g. ability to motivate oneself; ability to calm oneself down; ability to keep a sense of self even under stress; ability to deal with failure; ability to remain capable of acting even under pressure; ability to concentrate. These skills can be specifically trained, so it is important to know exactly where to start.

    When is the test useful?

    • If there is a desire for change on the part of the pupil or there is hope that such a desire can be awakened.
    • If it is unclear why a pupil has learning problems, why previous measures are not working, where someone is standing in their own way.
    • If there are differences between the student's self-perception and the parents' or teachers' impressions.
    • If it seems sensible to show the pupil clearly ("scientifically objectively") what the reasons for his/her learning problems might be.
    • The test alone does not bring about change, so it should only be used with careful consideration; it must be followed by active work to bring about change. But it can, for example, help to ensure that tutoring is more effective in the future because other factors are changed.

    Procedure:

    • Consideration by a teacher that a more precise diagnosis for pupil:in XYZ could be useful; discussion in counseling conference or with level coordination.
    • Discussion of the class teacher with the parents and the pupil; information about perceptions and considerations; suggestion of diagnostics; information about costs; transmission of an e-mail address of the parents
    • Telephone or e-mail contact between the learning consultant and parents; if necessary, further personal meeting; clarification of costs
    • Online completion of the test by the student
    • as soon as the test is completed, the learning advisor can access the test data online
    • Evaluation discussion with the pupil, either alone or with the parents depending on the agreement, possibly also with the class teacher/level coordinator
    • It can then be discussed what further measures can be taken to change certain circumstances
  • Group coaching

In some cases, it is advisable to support the student in the form of group coaching. The experience that other students have the same or a similar problem in relation to school encourages them to support each other and to try the change process together.

  • Anti-blackout training

Bad dreams before and blackouts during class tests? Something can be done about it!

Anti-blackout training is a short-term training course of two or three sessions that helps pupils to be less nervous before and during class tests and to be able to retrieve and apply the knowledge they have learned in a more targeted way. It is offered on request and as needed as a club (7th/8th period) for grades 5-7.

The training uses Wingwave® coaching methods under the guidance of Dr. Bickmann, who is a certified Wingwave® coach. Wingwave® is a proven coaching method with which various blockages can be resolved quickly and sustainably. For more information click here: wingwave.com

  • Wingwave®-Coaching

Dr. Bickmann and Ms. Suilmann are certified as Wingwave® coaches and offer this short-term coaching especially for students in grades 8-Q2 as individual coaching.
