Nowadays, remembering the National Socialist era is an important part of historical awareness. In order to come to terms with the past and learn lessons for the future, the tenth grade of our school visited the Esterwegen Memorial on July 8, 2025.
The memorial is located on the site of a former concentration camp and later penal camp. In a permanent exhibition and on a tour of the extensive grounds, the pupils were given an insight into the history of the camp system and the suffering of the people who were imprisoned there. The pupils found the insight into the individual fates of some former prisoners and the lives of some of the perpetrators of the time particularly impressive. The tenth grade learned this personal information with the help of worksheets and the exhibition located there, which is embellished with photos, letters and biographies.
The excursion not only offered the opportunity to deepen historical knowledge, but also provided food for thought. A visit like this only highlights once again how important it is to remember and to remain aware of the extent of the dramatic events of that time.
